Dear all, After the successful March 7at7 event, we are working on a new format for the 7at7 series, with a short news programme starting exactly at 7pm and an introduction to an interesting project/initiative afterwards. Tomorrow Wednesday, April 7, we will introduce a nice project from the french-speaking part of Switzerland the FairSocialNet.ch organization which offers various self-hosted platforms like peertube, mastodon, and diaspora. Dear all, The Internet Society introduces a new training programme titled ISOC Fundamentals: https://www.internetsociety.org/chapters/fundamentals-program/2021/ To participate you need to be an ISOC member and apply before March 15. The schedule of the first series of webinars (2h each) is as follows: April 12: Encryption April 13: Community Networks April 14: Infrastructure and Community Development April 15: Open Standards for Web servers April 16-22: Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security April 23: Internet way of Networking An integral part of the training will be the creation of an "initiative" (which could be as simple as a blog or short video) by May 23rd, 2021 a requirement for receiving the participation certificate. Dear ISOC-CH members and friends, The 7at7.ch series concludes its first experimental period with a distributed hybrid panel on a critical reflection about hackathons in light of the recent MakeZurich festival, https://makezurich.ch/, organized by Open Network Infrastructure association. [ISOC-CH Ann] 7at7 series starts online

Dear ISOC-CH members and friends, The quarantine has affected significantly the organization of the 7at7 series in the context of ISOC-CH's VIT Labs project [1], since it was designed to create open urban spaces that facilitate learning and engagement with technology through direct human contact. So, after a small delay we are launching the 7at7.ch series online with the support of the Digitale Gesellschaft [2] who maintains a BigBlueButton web conferencing server, a very good open source alternative to proprietary and privacy-abusive platforms like zoom. [3] The first workshop will be on May 7th, at 7pm, an online course (in german) on “Basic computer protection and security of messengers and video conferences“ [4] To register, please send an e-mail to 7(a)7at7.ch and the access link will be provided to you. The mandate of the Advisory Committee will be: 1. Advise ISOC-CH on topics the members (of the committee) have expertise. 2. Be available as speakers for external events as subject matter experts. 3. [ISOC-CH Ann] Happy new year from ISOC Switzerland Chapter

Dear members 2018 is over and it was the most active year for the Internet Society Switzerland Chapter and the new board. We continued to run the project with pEp foundation to standardise and promote the pEp protocols. Together with the pEp foundation we attended three IETF meetings to discuss the submitted internet drafts. In Switzerland we run four workshops in 2018 in the Value of Internet Technologies series to discuss the impact of digital technologies on our society. In June 2018 Switzerland voted on the gambling law that introduced mandatory network blocking for unlicensed gambling sides. The ISOC Switzerland chapter was deeply involved in the campaign against the law and we tried to inform policy makers and Swiss citizens about the risks of network blocking. The vote was in favour for the law and for network blocking, but it was the first time that a network policy issue gained that much attention in the general public. Our board members engaged in several public events throughout the year, including the Swiss Internet Governance Forum 2018. All this wouldn’t be possible with the support and the hard work from our members. I want to thank all ISOC Switzerland Chapter members for supporting us in 2018! In 2019 we look forward to support the global ISOC action plan for 2019 that continues to build an open, globally-connected, secure, and trustworthy Internet for everyone. In Switzerland, we will continue the pEp project, involve in the Internet Governance discussion and plan new projects. Our organisational structure needs some adjustments and we will open the discussion with our members soon on how the ISOC Switzerland Chapter can grow faster and to be in a better position to engage in the discussion about the digital transformation in Switzerland. In order to reach our goals we need the support of our members and I want to invite you to become active and join us on our annual general assembly on the 21 March 2019 in Bern. Dear ISOC-CH members As you may have noticed, the agenda for the next GA has been enhanced on short notice with a statutes change proposal, which intends to increase the number of Board members. As I understood from the proponents, the goal is to: - have more people involved in Board activities - having people to replace board members in case someone is unable to fulfill the duties temporarily or permanently The proposal to simply increase the Board IMHO has some weaknesses (based on my own 4year experience in ISOC-CH Board) - Coordination within the Board in a geographically distributed manner is challenging already now - the more members the more challenges - Finding slots for Board-meetings get even more difficult - More people means more need for coordination and more potential for frictions - Thus, less efficiency - More seats are likely to attract less-qualified people for board - number of *qualified* candidates available among the membership is not particularly high Please find a counter-proposal in the attachment: - The counter-proposal allows to keep the Board small and flexible, while addressing the motivations for the main proposal: - Introduce the Extended Board, consisting of the Board and a pool of Additional Members of the Extended Board (AMEB) - - AMEB are simply nominated by the Board and confirmed by the GA - - AMEB duties are assigned / delegated by the Board - AMEB can be elected to replace vacancies in the Board, if needed - Board remains in charge of running the chapter and can decide to involve AMEB whenever needed and sensible - AMEB duties are assigned by the Board - Furthermore the voting procedures for the Board are simplified, i.e. open ballot allowed, if vote is in teams - Clarified secret ballot requirements As usual, discussion on statutes change proposals will be on the existing list: statutes(a)lists.isoc.ch list (NOT on announcements-list) Feel free to subscribe at http://lists.isoc.ch/mailman/listinfo/statutes cheers Bernie
